Walter William Cook Sr. died June 25, in Kemmerer, at the age of 87. He was born in Green River, to Edwin [Ted] and Lillian [Cross] Cook.
Walt attended school in Green River and was an avid football, basketball and baseball player. His basketball team took the state championship two years in a row. He lettered in football, basketball and track. He was awarded All State honors three times before graduating from high school in 1953. He was inducted into the Green River High School Hall of Fame in 2013 for his football career.
After graduation, he joined and served in the United States Air Force. Walt worked for American Electric in Green River, the forest service in New Mexico and on a ranch in Cokeville. After working 22 years for the United States Post Office, he retired.
During his youth he loved spending time at his Cook grandparents’ ranch in Hilliard. At times during his life Walt enjoyed hunting, fishing, working with farm animals, working leather and had various collections. Being quite the storyteller he would often talk about his grandparents and favorite uncles and was proud that he was named after both of his grandfathers. Walter was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Walter is survived by his wife, Mary Cook [Brower] of Wyoming; a son, Walter Cook Jr. [Brenda]; daughter, Crystal Nebeker [Corey] of Utah; son, Joseph Cook [Elise] of Colorado; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his brother, Larry Cook of Wyoming; sisters, Carol Diksen [Cal] of Washington and Karen Cook [Don DeLaune] of Wyoming.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Teddy and Gordon; a sister, Mary Kay; his children; three infant sons and two daughters; Annette and Rebecca [Becky] Cook.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 2, at the Lyman LDS Church. There was a viewing before the service, beginning at 10 a.m. Interment was at noon on Saturday, July 3, at the Memorial Mountain View Cemetery, in Cottonwood Heights (Salt Lake City), Utah.
