With three individual champions, three runners-up, three third-place finishers and 16 total trips to the podium, the Kemmerer High School wrestling team won its third consecutive 2A West Regional Tournament over the weekend at Shoshoni High School.

The Rangers finished in the top spot with 193.5 points, followed by Thermopolis with 178.5 points. Big Piney wrestled its way to third with 156.5 points, while Lovell and Greybull/Riverside rounded out the top five with 110 and 103 points, respectively. A total of 16 Rangers placed in the top eight of their respective classes, earning them a spot at next weekend’s 2A State Wrestling Championships in Casper.

Competing in their first-ever 4A West Regional Tournament in Riverton, the Lady Rangers also had a weekend to remember, placing third out of 24 teams. Star Valley finished in the top spot with 189.5 points, followed by Pinedale in second with 112 points and Kemmerer in third, with 86 points. Evanston and Green River rounded out the Top 5, with 85 and 76 points, respectively.

For the boys, six Rangers advanced to the championship match in their respective classes, with three emerging as champions. Roany Proffit claimed his third consecutive title at 126 pounds, while Graison Kelley at 165 pounds and Owen Barton at 215 pounds won their first 2A West championships. Michael Symons (144 pounds), Braxton Pope (175 pounds) and Tanner Schramm (190 pounds) finished as runners-up.

On the girls’ side, three Lady Rangers earned a spot in the championship match, with Kaylie Julander winning the title at 140 pounds. Riley Meyer (100 pounds) and Laynee Walker (120 pounds) finished as runners-up.

Rangers

Roany Proffit went 4-0 for the tournament, winning all four of his matches by pin; he pinned Big Piney’s Zavier Clifford in the first round of the championship match to win the title at 126 pounds.

At 165 pounds, Graison Kelley went 4-0, winning a 3-0 decision over Thermopolis’ Brody Sorensen to win the championship.

Owen Barton went 3-0 at 215 pounds, pinning his first two opponents, then winning a tough 5-2 decision over Lovell’s Rosendo Garcia to claim the title.

At 144 pounds, Michael Symons won a 8-3 decision over Greybull/Riverside’s Reece Whisenent in the semifinals to advance to the championship match; he lost in the finals to Thermopolis’ Will Ward.

Braxton Pope won a 7-2 decision over teammate Bridger Anderson in the semifinals to advance to the title match at 175 pounds; he lost to Ty Strohschein (Greybull/Riverside) for the 

championship.

At 190 pounds, Tanner Schramm won a 3-1 decision over Thermopolis’ Mason Reese in the semifinals, but fell to Dubois’ Wyatt Trembly in the championship match to finish runner-up.

Finishing third for the Rangers were Hunter Batista at 120 pounds, Gabe Emery at 157 pounds and Bridger Anderson at 175 pounds. Logan Emery finished fourth at 132 pounds, as did Noah Parks at 138 pounds.

Also placing in the top eight and earning a trip to state were: Abel Jimenez at 106 pounds (seventh place); Heston McMillan at 126 pounds (eighth place); Cole Rogers at 138 pounds (seventh place); Brace Vickrey at 150 pounds (eighth place) and Aaron Despain at 285 pounds (seventh place).

Lady Rangers

Four of the five Lady Rangers who competed in Riverton over the weekend finished in the Top 3 of their respective weight classes, led by a first-place finish by Kaylie Julander at 140 pounds. Riley Meyer and Laynee Walker finished second at 100 pounds and 120 pounds, respectively, while Lynsie Julander (145 pounds) finished third.

Lady Ranger Fatima Gulalai posted a 3-2 record at 120 pounds, but did not place.

After a bye in the first round, Kaylie Julander went 3-0 at 140 pounds, winning all of her matches by pin. She pinned Shoshoni’s Lacoda Kiser in the second round of the finals to win the championship.

At 100 pounds, Meyer posted a 2-1 record, advancing to the championship match with a pin over Kelly Walsh’s Michelle Henmen in the semifinals, before losing a close 5-3 decision to Pinedale’s McKinzie Mortensen for the title.

Laynee Walker advanced to the 120-pound championship match with a thrilling overtime win over Natrona County’s Caydence Watters. Walker lost in the title match to Jackson’s Tai McBride.

After pinning her first two opponents at 145 pounds, Lynsie Julander lost in the semifinals to Abrianna Kiser (Shoshoni) to drop to the consolation bracket. She battled back with a pin over Addi Burton (Lander Valley) to advance to the third-place match, where she won a 10-5 decision.
