Give ‘The Wild Robot’ series a shot

DreamWorks Animation is bringing Peter Brown’s beloved book, “The Wild Robot,” to life in a feature animated film, set to hit theaters on Sept. 27. This exciting adaptation is based on the first book in a charming trilogy that has captivated both adults and children alike.

The series is perfect for readers of all ages, and it’s also a great choice for reading aloud to younger children who aren’t quite ready for chapter books on their own. I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing the series through audiobooks on the Libby app — the sound effects truly immerse you in the story, making it come alive.

In the first book, “The Wild Robot,” we find a cargo ship wreckage of crates of robots scattered on a remote island. Curious otters explore the crates and accidentally push a button that turns on one of the robots.  Roz the robot awakes for the first time and doesn’t know how she got there.

After battling a fierce storm and escaping a vicious bear attack, she realizes that her only hope for survival is to adapt to this island and learn to survive. The animals are frightened by her. She learns to communicate with the animals which in turn, teach her to build a shelter and grow a garden.

She helps them, as well. At the end of this book, the factory that created the robots comes to take them back to where they were built.

In the second book, “The Wild Robot Escapes,” we find Roz trapped in a world designed for her new life. She was designed to work alongside humans and robots and to live in the civilized world. But her computer brain is filled with perfect memories of her old life on the island.

In the third book, “The Wild Robot Protects,” Roz the Robot is enjoying life with her diverse family. Her adopted goose son, Brightbill, has grown up and is starting a new life with his mate, Glimmerwing. They are starting a family of their own and Roz is excited to be a grandmother.

A poison tide is threatening the island, killing the fish and all wildlife in its path. Roz sets out to stop the poison tide.

I hope you will find this series as endearing as I did. I grew to love Roz and her little gosling son, and all of their many adventures. I can’t wait to go see the movie!

The three books in the series — “The Wild Robot,” “The Wild Robot Escapes,” and “The Wild Robot Protects” — are available from the Lincoln County Library System in print and CD book, and from the Libby app as an ebook and audiobook.
