Wyo. govt officials speak up about Charlottesville

Posted

This past weekend, white nationalists gathered in Charlottesville, Virginia, to protest the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee. They carried Nazi and Confederate flags and chanted racist slogans.

The group clashed violently with counter-protesters, leading Virginia’s governor to declare a state of emergency.

The events turned deadly when one woman was killed by a car that rammed into a group of counter-protesters. Two Virginia state troopers monitoring the situation were also killed when their helicopter crashed.

President Donald Trump condemned the hatred and violence “on many sides,” and then later definitively condemned hate groups. The events prompted Wyoming senator Mike Enzi and Rep. Liz Cheney to release statements on social media.

“I was saddened to hear about the tragic events in Charlottesville and my prayers are with the victims. White supremacist notions, hate and violence have no place in our society. They run counter to our values that we all share as Americans. We as a nation have come so far, fighting wars at home and abroad, to protect the idea that all individuals are created equal. We should condemn those who use violence to propagate hate, racism or anti-Semitism in our country.” – Senator Mike Enzi

“My prayers go out to victims of #Charlottesville domestic terror attack. Vile white supremacist/neo-Nazi hatred has no place in America.

“I welcome President Trump’s comments at the White House this morning, and his determination to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.” – Representative Liz Cheney
