Wrestling smokes the competition at home

On Feb. 11, the Kemmerer Rangers met at home against Big Piney in their final dual before regionals. The Rangers completely dominated the mat, winning 55-18.

“They wrestled really well,” coach Bart Jernigan said. “We need to continue to wrestle well.”

Jernigan said there are a few things for the wrestlers to work on.

“There were moments where there were lulls during matches,” Jernigan said. “They need to clean up their technique and continue to wrestle throughout the entire match.”

According to wyowrestling.com, Karl Haslem, Conner Vickrey, Gabe Emery, Riggen Walker, Cayson Smith and AQ Peternal are all in the top seven ranking of their respective weight classes. Vickrey is the reigning champion of his weight class at state in 2020 and is currently at the top of the rankings.

“Last year I was the underdog,” Vickrey said. “This year no one can touch me. There have been no close matches.”

Vickrey said he has been wrestling for 14 season, since he was three years old.

“When I was little my home life was rough,” Vickrey said. “Wrestling with my dad got me away from it.”

Vickrey said he is pumped up and ready for regionals and state.

“I have no reservations,” Vickrey said.
