Wrestlers compete at Ron Thon, JV wrestler wins class

KEMMERER — The Kemmerer Rangers wrestling team headed to Riverton on Jan. 31 – Feb. 1 to compete in the Ron Thon Memorial Tournament. The Rangers wrestling team came in 26 out of 41 teams. The Rangers had five wrestlers in varsity and six wrestlers in the junior varsity bracket. In the 120 weight class Connor Vickrey started the tournament playing against Emma Karhu from Powell. Defeating Karhu, Vickrey moved forward to compete against Seamus Casey of Thunder Basin High School. Vickrey would fall in the second round and move to the consolation bracket and fall to Mica Herrera from Moorcroft. 

In the 126 weight class Colter Julian won his first match after not having a match in the first round. Julian went on to beat Creeden Schell of Big Piney and fell to Kade Flores from Green River in his second match, moving him to the consolation bracket. Julian competed against Quinton Hecker from Lovell; there Julian was defeated by Hecker. At the 132 weight class Dawson Schramm won his first three matches before falling to Reese Osborne of Sheridan. In the consolation bracket, Schramm went on to win his next two matches taking third. In the 138 weight class Nathaniel Ricket held a bye match for his first round and would fall to Felipe Gaytan of Greybull/Riverside. Ricket went to the consolation bracket and there fell to Dayton Mathews of Glenrock. Riggen Walker also competed in the 138 weight class, winning his first match against Aidan Martin from Cheyenne Central and falling to Mason Yenney of Rock Springs. In the consolation bracket Riggen fell to Zach Weipert of Green River. In the junior varsity tournament, the JV wrestlers would come in 27th with a team score of 53. At the 106 weight class, Karl Haslem won his first two matches before losing to Bridger Smith form Star Valley. Haslem won his next two matches in the consolation bracket but fell to KC Gibson from Wind River. At the 113 weight class, Mont Haslem fell in his first match to Angel Ontiveros from Thunder Basin. Haslem won his next two matches in the consolation bracket before falling to Kyler Marchant of Lovell. 

In the 120 weight class Dalan Vang and Ashtin Stauffer both competed. Vang won his first two matches and fell to Raf Greene from Star Valley. Stauffer lost in his first match to Jace Berry and in the consolation bracket Stauffer won the next match and fell in his next match to Vinny Timmons of Powell. Vang fell in his first match of the consolation bracket to Dominic Romero from Cheyenne South. At the 138 weight class Abel Alverado had a bye match in the first round and fell in the second round to Brian Jackson of Thunder Basin. In the consolation bracket Alverado won his first match and lost the second match to Braxton Smith of Big Piney. In the 160 weight class AQ Martinez would go undefeated and took first place against Joshua Semadeni of Star Vally. Coach Bullington and coach Hartung both stated since they have been a part of the Kemmerer wrestling team Kemmerer has not had a JV wrestler win the Ron Thon. Martinez set a goal at the beginning of the season and told a teammate that he was going to win the JV 160 Ron Thon. The wrestlers will be back in action on at home on Friday Feb. 7 for the Briderland Duals and away to Lyman on Tuesday Feb. 11.
