The Kemmerer varsity boys’ basketball teams struggled last weekend at their two home games.

On Friday, Jan. 19, the boys hosted the Wind River Cougars.

The Cougars got the early jump right away, closing out the first quarter in the lead at 31–15. After that, the Rangers were able to get some numbers on the board, but it just wasn’t enough, according to Rangers head coach Steve Moyles.

The Rangers fell to the Cougars 91–52.

“The Rangers could not recover,” Moyles said. “We need to work on our zone defense and man to man.”

Moyles said the team will be working on improving skills to deny base-line shots and cut off the drive with a more aggressive style of play at practice.

Sophomore Colter Brunski felt the Cougars were a tough team to play.

“They had more size and were quicker,” Brunski said. “We need to get better at breaking the press and passing. We also need to communicate more on defense.”

Brunski spoke highly about his coaches as he described what it’s like during practice for the Rangers.

“I really respect our coaches a lot,” Brunski continued. “Pushing us every day in practice helps us master the fundamentals like dribbling, passing and shooting.”

The varsity boys also picked up a loss on Saturday, Jan. 20, to Wyoming Indian, 79–54.

Moyles said the Rangers had a much better performance rebounding during the game against the Indians.

The Rangers rallied in the fourth quarter, but the Indians ultimately ended up with more points on the board.

Unfortunately, post player Derick Wilcox, who had nine points and 10 rebounds for the Rangers, left the game with a knee injury in the 4th quarter.

“We are hoping for a quick recovery,” Moyles said.

The Rangers play at Mountain View on Wednesday, Jan. 31. The J.V. game is at 4:00 p.m., and the varsity boys play at 7:00 p.m.
