The Title 1 department hosted two educational and fun reading nights in April. Our Title I program is a federally-funded program that provides extra support for students, so they can reach grade level proficiency in both reading and math.

Title 1 is also responsible for educating parents in ways to assist their children’s education. One way to do this is by encouraging parents to read and do activities with their children.

The first reading night took place on Thursday, April 12, at Canyon Elementary. A teacher from each grade level gave an informative presentation on the importance of reading nonfiction text.

Afterward, the 3rd-6th grade students, along with their parents, completed a book scavenger hunt. Each student was given a list of clues that required him or her to use their knowledge of nonfiction text to find the answers. The second reading night took place on Monday, April 16, at Kemmerer Elementary. The parents of kindergarten through 2nd grade students were taken into the grade level classrooms to be informed about different reading skills and strategies. The students stayed in the gym where they had stories read to them.

Afterward, parents rejoined their students and together they wrote imaginative stories. These stories can now be seen hanging in the main hall at Kemmerer Elementary.

Title 1 staff would like to thank everyone who helped make these reading nights a success.

We also extend a special thank you to the St. James Episcopal Church of Kemmerer for a generous grant that was used to purchase books for every kindergarten through 6th grade student who attended these reading nights.
