Title 1 hosts Reading Adventure Night

Posted

KEMMERER — The Title 1 department at Kemmerer Elementary hosted an educational and fun Reading Adventure Night on Thursday, May 2, for kindergarten- through second-grade students and their parents. The Title I program is a federally-funded program that provides extra support for students to help them reach grade-level proficiency in both reading and math. Title 1 is also responsible for educating parents in ways to assist their children’s education. One way to do this is by encouraging parents to read with and do activities with their children.

The young students and their parents began in the KES gym for a short presentation on the importance of reading with your child at home and distributed a publication listing some tools for success. Studies are showing reading three times a week prior to school and reading 20 minutes a day with your child while in school can help your child reach the top 25 percent in reading proficiency and enhance their vocabulary.

After the presentation, a special guest reader, Lincoln County Library Director Richard Landreth, read and presented a funny adventure story, “The Day the Crayons Came Back” by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers.

Afterward, the parents and students created their very own crayon adventure story with a picture that will be published and was available to purchase at the event. Title I will donate a published copy of the book to the Lincoln County Library for all to view.

All students received a free book, fun bookmark and a poster donated by the Lincoln County Library. It was a fun event full of adventure, creativity and reading fun that the students are sure to remember.

Title 1 staff would like to thank everyone who helped make this reading night a success, including staff, teachers and volunteers. In addition, a special thank you goes to Richard Landreth and the Lincoln County Library for the generous donations of time and the posters. Thank you to all the students and parents for dedicating their time and creativity to make this event a success and promote reading at home.
