Reading aloud is “snow” much fun!

Posted

Winter books can be “snow” much fun!  Reading aloud to your little ones by a warm fire or under cozy blankets can be one of the joys of winter. It can also be a great way to bond with your children, create good memories and foster early literacy skills.

Here is a list of some of my favorite read-aloud picture books for winter.

“Baby Loves Winter” by Karen Katz

This is a fun lift-the-flap book. It’s great for holding the attention of toddlers and preschoolers. Kids get to guess what is behind the flap and then lift the flap to see if they are right.

“Mouse’s First Snow” by Lauren Thompson

This book is a simple and sweet story about a little mouse and his papa enjoying winter activities for the very first time.

“Red Sled” by Lita Judge

I love this book! It is a book with only a few words but delightful, funny pictures  I enjoy looking at the illustrations and telling the story in my own words.  Allow your children to do the same and help them develop their language skills.

“The Mitten” by Jan Brett

This story is a classic folktale about animals taking shelter in a lost mitten. It has gentle humor and the illustrations are detailed and wonderful.

“Froggy Gets Dressed” by Jonathan London

What happens when a hibernating frog wants to experience snow? Find out in this book. This story has noisy, active language and fun repetitions.  It also uses the word underwear, which always makes preschoolers laugh.

“The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats

This is the classic winter picture book.  It is just as good now as when it was first published nearly 60 years ago.  I enjoy the pictures and the rhythms in this book.  It is a very soothing, lyrical read.

“Snowball” by Lois Ehlert

This book has a very simple text and illustrations that are bright and colorful collages.  It is a fun story and gives people great ideas for making snowmen.

Stop by your local Lincoln County Library System and check out a few books. Then grab yourself a cozy blanket and sit down with your loved ones. Enjoy a great read and have “snow” much fun! See you at the library.
