Ranger wrestlers ready for 2019 regionals

Junior Colter Julian earned second place in the 126 class at the Carbon County Invite wrestling tournament in Saratoga last weekend. The Kemmerer Rangers host the 2A West regional tournament on Saturday, Feb. 16.

The post-season for the Kemmerer Ranger wrestling team is right around the corner. The Rangers earned third place at the Carbon County Invite in Saratoga on Friday, Feb. 8, and Saturday, Feb. 9, with 182.5 points. Kemmerer had three individual champions at the tournament, along with two second-place wrestlers and two third-place wrestlers.

Defending state champion Moorcroft had 208 points to earn first, and Pinedale earned second place with 203 points.

The Rangers will host the 2A West regional wrestling tournament at Kemmerer High School on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 9:30 a.m. Kemmerer will wrestle against Cokeville, Big Piney, Shoshoni, Wyoming Indian, Wind River, Saratoga, Dubois, Rocky Mountain, Lovell and Greybull/Riverside.The Rangers were regional champions last season.

In Saratoga, freshman Connor Vickrey (113) earned 5th place and scored 7 team points for the Rangers. He had two byes, two losses and two wins. Vickrey won by decision over Cokeville’s Nathan Thornock and won by decision over Big Piney’s Arie Kranendonk to claim 5th place.

Colter Julian (126) earned 2nd place at the Carbon County Invite and scored 25 team points. Julian beat Cokeville’s Wyatt Mackey, won by fall over Pinedale’s Zayne McClain, and won by major decision over Hulett’s Dalton Butler. In the 126 championship match, Julian fell to Keegan Gehlhausen of Pinedale to earn 2nd place.

Zakirie Malone (126) received a bye and lost two matches to Pinedale’s Keegan Gehlhausen and Niobrara County’s James Cushman.

Junior Dawson Schramm won the 132 class and scored 28 team points. Schramm won by fall over Big Piney’s Pedro Martinez and Burns’ Logan Branigan. Schramm won the championship match by fall over Caleb Cook from Moorcroft. Schramm is 40-6 this season.

Carson Carlson (138) earned 3rd place and 20 team points. Carlson beat Pinedale’s Isaac Grover, Shoshoni’s Andrew Daniels, a tie-breaker over teammate Matt Jones, and won by decision over Pinedale’s Ian Grover to claim 3rd place.

Matt Jones (138) finished in 6th place at the Carbon County Invite, beating Pinedale’s Richey O’Reilly, Colby Stockton of Burns and Saratoga’s Andrew Everett.

Donny Proffit (145) won 1st place and earned 29.5 team points. Proffit is 43-4 this season. He won by fall over Jeremy Gibble of Shoshoni, Karson Cline of Big Piney and Corban Woolstenhulme of Pinedale. In the championship, Proffit claimed victory by technical fall over Tryston Truempler from Shoshoni.

Josh Thatcher (152) finished in 2nd place with 26 team points. He beat Hanna-Elk Mountain’s Dade Thackston, Burn’s Zeb Ornelas and Lingle-Fort Laramie’s Zane Rising. Thatcher competed against Cokeville’s Ammon Teichert in the championship match but fell to the Panther wrestler to earn second place.

Hayden Julander (170) received a bye and lost two matches at Saratoga.

Jeydon Boyd (182) was third at the Carbon County Invite with 14 team points. Boyd beat Dylan Molzahn and Pacen Gifford (both of Niobrara County), and won by decision over Pinedale’s Ethan Carson to claim 3rd place.

Michael Grimes (195) received a bye and lost two matches in Saratoga.

Hayden Walker (195) continued his undefeated season to claim 1st place in Saratoga and earn 30 team points. Walker won by fall over all of his opponents: H-EM’s David Cruz, Burns wrestler Colter Haws, Pinedale’s Kolby Carson, and Moorcroft’s Parker Schlater in the championship match.

Thomas Archibald (220) earned 6th place and 3 team points for the Ranger wrestlers. Archibald received 2 byes and fell in three matches.

After the regional tournament in Kemmerer on Saturday, the Rangers will be at state in Casper next weekend.
