Kemmerer senior Hayden Julander wrestles Jackson Hole’s Kirby Castagno at the Riverton Ron Thon last weekend. The Rangers placed 9th out of 43 teams.
The Kemmerer Ranger wrestling team placed 9th out of 43 teams at the Riverton Ron Thon on Friday, Jan. 25, and Saturday, Jan. 26.
“I’m really proud of these kids, because the last four weeks have been some really big tournaments,” said Rangers head coach Darrell Bullington. “They’ve showed toughness and battled through, and hopefully it will continue to pay off in the next few weeks.”
The Ranger wrestlers will compete at the Bridgerland Classic in Cokeville on Friday, Feb. 1. At the Ron Thon, the Rangers had one champion wrestler, one second-place wrestler and one third place wrestler.
Senior Hayden Walker (195) continued his undefeated season for the Rangers. Walker won his weight class and scored 31.5 team points for the Rangers. In the quarterfinal match, Walker wrestled Dylon Case from Douglas and won by fall (1:39). The semifinal match pitted Walker against Evanston’s Pablo Escalante; Walker won by a technical fall. In the 195-pound championship match, Walker beat Laramie’s Zech Aguilar to claim 1st place. Walker’s success this season has earned him a No. 1 ranking in his 2A weight class on WyoWrestling.
“You’re only as good as your last performance, so there’s still a lot of things we need to work on,” Bullington said. “We’re working to get better every day and really focus on those techniques.”
Fellow senior Donny Proffit (145) earned second place at the Ron Thon and scored 26 team points for the Rangers. In the quarterfinal match, Proffit won by fall over Torrington’s Tristen Kingsley (2:32). Proffit won by decision over Riverton’s Ridge Briggs in the semifinal match. Proffit wrestled Kelly Walsh’s Analu Benabise in the 145 championship match but lost by decision. Proffit is currently ranked No. 1 in the 2A 145 class on WyoWrestling.
Bullington said at the upcoming regional and state tournaments, the Rangers will be able to place more wrestlers because they are smaller tournaments than what the team has competed at recently.
“We’ve had several wrestlers that have only been one match away from placing, like Colter (Julian), Jeydon (Boyd) and Carson (Carlson),” Bullington said. “We’ll need to place a lot of kids to contend for the state title.”
Junior Dawson Schramm (126) finished in 3rd place at the Riverton Ron Thon and scored 20 team points for Kemmerer. In the quarterfinal, Schramm wrestled Green River’s Jacob Weipert and won by major decision. Schramm faced off against Jace Palmer from Kelly Walsh in the semifinal match and lost by decision. In the consolation semifinal, Schramm won by decision over Nathan Redman from Lander Valley. Schramm claimed third place by winning by decision over Natrona County’s Cyruss Meeks. Schramm is ranked No. 1 in his 2A class on WyoWrestling.

Then Julian fell to Sheridan’s Reese Osborne, but won by fall over Cheyenne East’s Jason Hoskins.
