The Paws and Claws Animal Adoption and Care Center is hosting Bark in the Park, a community education and awareness event, on Saturday, August 19, in Diamondville Park.
Opening ceremonies begin at 8 a.m., followed by a pancake breakfast. From 8 to 8:45 a.m., residents can register their dogs for the dog show, which takes place at 9:00 a.m.
Categories for the dog show include cutest, ugliest, best dog costume, friendliest, best tricks, dog/owner look-alikes and Best of Show.
At 10:00 a.m., Paws and Claws will have a microchip clinic. The microchip costs $25, and that includes registration. Cats are also welcome to be microchipped.
Other events at 10:00 a.m. include owner workshops, and dog nail clipping.
“We really just want to teach people how to be responsible pet owners so their animals don’t end up in shelters,” said Robbie Ray, a Paws and Claws volunteer.
At 11:00 a.m., attendees will have the chance to meet with police officers and a K9 team from Evanston.
After lunch, family games begin, and attendees can enjoy a performance by Ramblin’ Band, courtesy of the Frontier Arts Council.
At 3:30 p.m., there will be a pie-eating contest. Throughout the day, there will be cakewalks, and raffle winners will be announced.
Winners of the Rescue Charlie contest will also be announced in the afternoon.
Rescue Charlie has been a contest to see who could find all the pictures of Charlie, a dog that has been at Paws and Claws for three years, in local businesses. Attendees will also hear Charlie’s rescue story.

There are no paid positions at the Paws & Claws Animal Shelter.
The shelter runs entirely on donations.
