Laura Gerber, Opal town clerk, said the journey to getting the golf course started over two years ago.
“We wanted to give residents something to do outside of their homes,” Gerber said. “We wanted something adult-friendly since we don’t have many kids here.”
The opening of the free-to-play golf course coincided with Opal’s annual Founders Day celebration. This year was the town’s 106th birthday.
Although there couldn’t be the usual potluck lunch because of COVID-19, Gerber said the day was well attended.
“We had well over 60 people there,” Gerber said. “It’s the most since I have been here.”
