Mark Tesoro named WPA President

Mark Tesoro, publisher of the Kemmerer Gazette, Uinta County Herald, the Pinedale Roundup, Sublette Examiner and Bridger Valley Pioneer, was named the new Wyoming Press Association (WPA) president at the winter WPA convention in Casper on Saturday, Jan. 20.

Tesoro replaces Bob Kennedy of the Cody Enterprise.

“I have a lot of board experience, from the local Trout Unlimited chapter to the Evanston Chamber of Commerce board and Catholic Church Parish Council,” Tesoro said. “I think I’ll bring some new ideas and perspectives to the board from my 15 years in newspapers and previous service on other boards.”

The Evanston native was elected onto the WPA board in 2013, and served as treasurer and vice-president before being elected president at the WPA winter convention.

Tesoro said he understands the important role of community newspapers and his responsibility as the WPA president to support Wyoming’s quality newspapers.

“In addition to providing news and information, newspapers are the historical record of what is happening in our cities and towns across America,” Tesoro said. “Yes, you can get information from other media, but no one covers and archives the news like we do. From the house fire downtown to the obituary of a loved one, from the state champion swimmer to the little girl battling cancer, from the fight with the county commissioners to the minutes of the city council, we capture it all. That’s what we do and we do it better than anybody else.”

Tesoro said the biggest challenge he will face in this new position is that his appointment coincides with the retirement of longtime WPA executive director Jim Angel.

“We’ll be charting a new course for the WPA,” Tesoro said.

Wyoming newspapers are regarded as some of the best in the nation. The Wyoming Press Association provides resources and education for the state’s newspaper organizations.

According to Tesoro, “This year, newspapers in Wyoming won more awards from the National Newspaper Association than newspapers from any other state except California.”

Tesoro said he is excited to serve on the board and support the state’s newspaper professionals.

“The 40 plus papers around our state care greatly about their local communities,” Tesoro said. “Newspapers in Wyoming have been serving readers for well over a hundred years and we’re not going away.”
