Locals hooked on Valentine’s fishing — Lions Club derby raises over $10,000

Posted

It was a weekend filled with valentine’s hearts and fish hooks at Lake Viva Naughton. Couples and singles alike traveled north of Kemmerer to the 37th annual Lions Club ice fishing derby. The annual event is the group’s largest fundraiser, which helps fund all of the club’s projects. This year’s event raised over $10,000 and the money will go to plenty of very good causes. Some of the causes they support include providing vision and hearing care for youths and elderly members of the community who cannot afford them; diagnostic youth vision care equipment for local child development organizations and community recreational development or upgrades. More projects are always on the horizon; stay tuned for news about a new project coming soon to the Kemmerer Community Kids’ fishing pond.

“There were a total of 42 fish measured over the weekend,” Mark Quinn, Kemmerer Lions Club president, said. “A slower year, where normally we see upwards of 60 to 90 fish.”

The event hosted 325 participants for the 2021 event despite the removal of the tagged fish prizes. Due to highly restrictive insurance policy options, the club decided not to have any tagged fish this year. It didn’t stop folks from coming out and supporting the popular event. The total prize payout was $4,850. Congratulations to all the fishermen, women and youth.
