On April 19 and 20, Kemmerer High School band and choir students attended the Southwest District Music Festival in Star Valley. Every year both groups perform for judges and receive a rating based on their performance.

District Festival is our state competition for the year — everything we do during the year builds up to this one event.

The rating scale the judges use goes in order from highest to lowest: Superior, Excellent, Good, Fair and Poor. This year our Concert Band and Concert Choir each received a Superior rating. Both groups did a wonderful job and gave 110 percent effort.

Another aspect of festival is the solo and ensemble part that takes place on the last day. Students can choose to perform a solo or participate in a small ensemble for a judge. We had many students who took the time to learn a solo and performed at their utmost ability.

For choir, we had ten vocal soloists perform. The vocalist who received an Excellent rating was Genisis Malone, and the following soloists received a Superior rating: Sierra Rogers, Marisa Orcutt, Trenton Skidmore, Savannah Hall, Tucker Erickson, Kendra Aase, Kimberlee Smith, Seva Yuliyanti and Holden Stubbs. Thanks for working hard and having the courage to stand up and sing all by yourself!

For Band, we had six soloists perform. The students who received Excellent ratings were Ray Haslam on bass clarinet and Eli Erickson on tuba. The students who received Superior ratings on their solos were Drew Stubbs on trumpet, Brayden Dearden on xylophone, Sammi Butler on tenor saxophone, and Eli Erickson on clarinet.

Everyone performed well and I am so proud of all the students who were horrified of performing for a judge, but did it anyway. Congratulations to everyone and thank you for all of your work. Monday, May 21, will be our 7th–12th grade awards banquet in the high school commons at 6:30 p.m.
