It’s rodeo season, and the dust was flying at the Kemmerer Youth and Little Buckaroo Rodeo on Saturday, July 14. The Kemmerer Riding club hosted 85 contestants and over 300 entries from surrounding areas to participate in the long-standing tradition. There was plenty of action as the kids tested their skills and toughness against their competition.
It was one giant tailgate party as the rodeo grounds were surrounded by pickup trucks filled with families and friends ready to cheer on the kiddos. Overcast skies and the reliable Wyoming winds kept everyone cool as the competition began.
All the events were split into age groups. The ground events got things started with dummy calf roping, the goat tail ribbon pull, goat tie down, stick horse barrels and the calf ribbon pull.
The rough stock events really got things going as sheep, calf, steer, bareback, mini bulls and junior bull rides began. The crowd was all smiles and laughs as they watched the little kids hang on for dear life in the sheep riding.
“The bucking horses are so cool,” said McKay Galloway, age 7, from Utah. “I saw a girl was riding one and she was awesome!”

“They look so scary,” said Taya Broadhead, age 8, from Kemmerer, referring to the bulls. “We have to be careful,” she said to her cousin McKay as the bulls slammed against the gate. “We don’t want to get smashed.”
But Taya was grinning ear to ear as she explained what she likes the most about the rodeo, “Everything!” she said as she kept one eye over her shoulder.
The event originated as the Little Buckaroo Rodeo until the Kemmerer Riding Club took over in 2006. It has been an annual event ever since. A few years ago the rodeo was expanded to older ages and changed the name to Kemmerer Youth and Little Buckaroo Rodeo. More rough stock and horse events were added, and the rodeo expanded to include all kids up to age 17.
The Kemmerer Little Buckaroo and Youth Rodeo All-Around buckle winners: Rocky Harris (ages 5-7), Kayla Teichert (ages 11-14), Hadley Gross (ages 15-17), Stetson Douglas (ages 8-10) and Kashen Francis (ages 0-4).
“The Kemmerer Riding Club would like to thank all the volunteers who helped the day of the rodeo,” said Penny Haslem, Riding Club Treasurer. “Adults and youth from the community, as well as parents of the contestants from outside communities, all jumped in and helped where needed. It was greatly appreciated!”
Haslem explained the rodeo is made possible each year by members of the Kemmerer Riding Club (President Veronica Proffit, Vice President Jeremiah Miller and Secretary Danniel Fox), sponsors, and support from the community at their local fundraisers like the Valentines Bake Sale, Rodeo Snowies and the Petting Zoo.
