On Sept. 6 and 7, the Rangers golf team participated in the Thermopolis Invite against 2A West teams Lovell — the defending 2A state champions — and Thermopolis.

The Kemmerer Rangers were last year’s 2A state runners-up, and Thermopolis is this year’s new addition to the 2A division after reclassification. The Legion Golf Course was the site of the last event of the fall season before the 2A state meet next week. Twenty boys and two girls played under perfect weather and course conditions.

The Kemmerer Ranger boys won the team event with an excellent two-day total of 731. Thermopolis came in second with a 740 total. Lovell was third at 816.

The Rangers were led by senior Rayce Kindschuh’s third place finish of 87-83–170. Next for the Rangers was Blake Wood with an 83-90–173, a score that tied him for fourth place. Ben Wergin fired an 89-88–177 to finish sixth. Shawn Crank had his best two-day score and finished in eighth place with a 102-100–201. Rounding out the varsity scoring for the Rangers was Michael Clarke, who placed ninth with 113-100–213. Two more Rangers made the trip — freshman Nolin Antilla fired a 116-111–227 and Hayes Merck scored 118-117–235.

This was a great team effort by all the boys. We played well on Thursday and came back on Friday to improve nine strokes. We are always trying to improve from day one to day two. This is how a team can win a championship.

Each of the boys improved their season average. We are hoping this is a big step in preparing for the state meet this coming week. I think the boys are ready for the 2A state championship in Newcastle.
