Enzi to senators: do more than complain about tax bill

Posted

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Mike Enzi (R-Wyo) challenged members of the Senate Finance Committee to offer improvements rather than simply try to sink a tax reform proposal being offered by the GOP.

“This isn’t my first time legislating,” Enzi said. “I was in the Wyoming Legislature for 10 years and clear back then I discovered that it’s easier to kill a bill than it is to pass one…If you can create a little confusion, you can kill a bill. But to pass a bill, you have to get a positive vote at every [step]...We will see through the amendments whether it is an attempt to kill the bill or whether it is an attempt to improve the bill.”

This is the second day of the Senate Finance Committee’s consideration of a bill to fundamentally reform the U.S. tax code, something that has not been done since 1986.

Under the proposal, Wyoming would see 1,792 new jobs and a middle-income family on average would see their after-tax income increase by $2,544, according to an analysis by the Tax Foundation. The Tax Foundation also found the plan would also lead to a 3.7 percent increase in the country’s economy over the long term and 2.9 percent higher wages.
