The National Merit Scholarship Corporation named their 16,000 semifinalists on Wednesday, Sept. 9 in a press release. Sophia Failoni of Diamondville is one of 16 students from Wyoming who were named as semifinalists. This year, over 1.5 million high school juniors entered the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, commonly known as the PSAT, according to a press release.
“The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state,” the press release said. “The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.”
After semifinalists are chosen to be finalists, they will compete for three types of National Merit Scholarships. There are 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships, 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards and 4,100 college-sponsored awards, according to the press release. Winners will be announced in April 2021 through July 2021.
