Diamondville council holds meeting

The Diamondville Town Council held their regular meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Diamondville Town Hall.

Roxanne Rudy, president of the Kemmerer Senior Center board of directors, approached the Town of Diamondville during the public comment period to ask support in the Senior Center’s potential location move.

The Senior Center has already approached the City of Kemmerer and the Lincoln County Commissioners for support with the project.

“We are a great organization that offers wonderful things to the community,” Rudy said. “But I think we all know our location has served its time.”

The Senior Center is looking at two possible sites for a new location: the old BLM building or a lot near the Kemmerer Recreation Center.

Rudy asked the council for a letter of support for the Center and thanked the Town for their continued monetary support.

When asked about the timetable for the move, Rudy said if the board chose the old BLM building, “things would move along pretty quickly,” but if they chose to relocate to the lot near the Rec Center, grant applications and construction would likely take a lot longer.

The Diamondville council said they would write the letter of support, and several council members said they would personally donate their time to help the Center move to a new location when the time came.

The council also discussed 6th penny  tax projects. Most of the communities in Lincoln County have proposed projects that they would use the sixth penny tax revenue to complete. The communities must submit a resolution detailing the projects to the Lincoln County Commissioners, then the issue goes on the voting ballot.

“The revenue will be distributed by project, and not by population, so it would be a shame if it passed and we didn’t have a project the money could go to,” Diamondville mayor Eric Backman said. “The citizens of Diamondville would already be paying the tax, so we should come up with some projects the money could go to.”

Like other Lincoln County communities, the council proposed several street renovation projects to be funded by potential sixth penny tax revenue.

The council brainstormed a few road renovation ideas, including a complete crack seal of the concrete in lower Diamondville and redoing McGovern road behind St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

“It doesn’t just have to be streets,” Councilwoman Kathy Stukel said. “It can also be about beautifying the community, as well as streets.”

Stukel suggested that maybe the funds could also go to updating or replacing the street department’s equipment.

“We will have some project estimates for the next meeting, and we’ll go from there,” Backman said.

The next Diamondville Town council meeting is on Monday, March 5, at 6:00 p.m., at Diamondville Town Hall.
