Cokeville second place at wrestling regionals, basketball teams ready for post-season games

The Panthers boys’ basketball team split this week’s games against the Farson Pronghorns and the Rattlers of Little Snake River Valley. The Panthers traveled to Farson on Friday, Feb. 19, in hopes of getting a win to improve their standings in the conference going into post-season play. It was not meant to be as the Panthers fell 40-56. Nate Barnes had 17 points and Tyler Moyes had nine to lead the Panther scoring.

The Panthers had to turn around and host the Rattlers on Saturday. It was senior night and the last game of the regular season. The Panthers played strong and took the big win 58-23. Treyson Dayton put up 15 points for the Panthers, followed by Tyler Moyes with 12. Every Panther, even the younger Panthers, got in on the scoring for a well rounded game.

The Panthers will head to Saratoga on Thursday for regional playoffs. The top two teams will advance to Saturday’s 1A west regional tournament in Lander. Good luck, Panthers.

The Panther wrestlers traveled to Big Piney High School on Saturday, Feb. 20, to compete in the 2A southwest Regional Quadrant Tournament. There were four quadrants throughout the state for the 2A. The top four finishers at each weight qualified for the state tournament held in Casper on Thursday, Feb. 25. There were six teams competing at the tournament, Big Piney, Cokeville, Dubois, Kemmerer, Wind River and Wyoming Indian. At this tournament, each team was allowed only two wrestlers per weight.   

Cokeville took 18 wrestlers in 11 weights in hopes of qualifying all 18 for the state tournament. Following several matches, the Panthers found themselves with 13 wrestlers placing in the top four of their respective weights. Wrestlers finishing in fourth place: Dakota Nelson (145), Weston Murdock (160) and Addison Lyman (170). Third place finishers: Wyatt Mackey (132) and Michael Cook (195). Runners-up were Micah Petersen (120), Garrett Reece (145), Ammon Halls (152), Matt Thompson (170) and Conner Viehweg (220). Panthers finishing as champions at their respective weights were: Cael Thompson (138), Eli Linford (160) and Landon Walker (182). Congratulations to all the wrestlers for competing hard and getting better each time they wrestled. As a team Cokeville finished in second place with 185.0 points, just behind winning team Kemmerer with 186.5.

The Panthers will travel to Casper for the State 2A Wrestling Tournament held on Thursday, Feb. 25. This year due to COVID-19, the State Tournament will be divided up between three days. 2A will compete on Thursday, 3A competes on Friday, and 4A competes on Saturday. Good luck, wrestlers.

The Lady Panthers basketball team finished their regular season with two big wins. They traveled to Farson on Friday, Feb. 19, and defeated the Lady Pronghorns 63-48. Kylee Dayton had 16 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and six steals. Emmie Barnes and Rylee Teichert each had 13 points. Harley Harmon had 12 points and seven rebounds. Tana Teichert had 11 rebounds.

The Lady Panthers hosted the Lady Rattlers of Little Snake River on Saturday for senior night and their last regular season game. They came away with another huge win 67-34. Rylee Teichert had 18 points and eight rebounds. Emmie Barnes had 11 points and seven rebounds. Kallianne Toomer had seven rebounds and Kylee Dayton had five assists and five steals. Congratulations, Lady Panthers.

They will play on Wednesday in Farson for the regional playoffs and then travel to Lander on Saturday for the west regional tournament. Good luck, Lady Panthers.
