Members of American Legion Post 55 were special guests at the Canyon Elementary School awards assembly on Monday, April 1.

The Legion members presented the colors as the students stood and placed their hands over their hearts.

At the conclusion of the awards assembly, Legion member Eddie Ourada explained that the group wanted to recognize Canyon Elementary teachers for teaching their students how to respect the American flag.

“We present the flags at the parades through town,” Ourada said. “We were happy to see that when your teachers brought you down to the parades, they were telling you to stand up, put your hand over your heart and remove your hats as the flag passed.”

All the teachers received a plaque of thanks for their work teaching the students flag etiquette, to much applause from the students.

After the presentation, the Legion presented each student with a patriotic bookmark.
